California Coastal Cleanup Day

Join Sea Hugger for Coastal Cleanup Day in Half Moon Bay. This annual event brings together volunteers across California to remove trash from our beaches, lakes, and waterways.

We’ll meet across the street from Surfers Beach in Half Moon Bay. Every year, hundreds of pounds of plastic and other waste are removed during this statewide effort. Your participation helps protect marine life and supports Sea Hugger’s mission to keep Mama Ocean clean.

Details

  • When: September 20, 2025 from 9am - 12pm

  • Where: Across from Surfers Beach, Half Moon Bay, CA

  • What to bring: Reusable gloves, bucket, water bottle, and sun protection

By joining us, you’ll not only make an immediate impact but also learn more about plastic pollution and how we can all reduce our reliance on single-use plastics.

January Dune's Beach Cleanup

Join Us for a Wave of Change at Dunes Beach!

Every 4th Saturday of the month, Sea Hugger is turning Dunes Beach in Half Moon Bay into THE place to be for eco-heroes like YOU. Grab your friends, family, kids, dogs—heck, bring your neighbor, your yoga buddy, or your barista (we love caffeine-fueled energy!)—and let’s team up to kick plastic pollution to the curb. Together, we’re protecting our beautiful marine environment and giving aquatic life the respect and clean waters they deserve.

This isn’t just a cleanup; it’s a movement. While we’re on the sand, we’ll share tips to cut plastic dependency, build sustainable communities, and address the root cause of pollution. Because saving the planet is serious business—but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun doing it. So, grab your reusable gloves and sunny smiles, and let’s make waves for a better future! See you there, beach warriors!

First Flush

First Flush

  • Half Moon Bay, CA USA (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We’re excited for First Flush this year and we at the RCD are seeking volunteers for the First Flush program, our biggest annual community science water quality event. First Flush is the first significant rain of the season, when pollutants that have accumulated across the landscape during the dry season wash off the land and can enter storm drains and creeks and eventually flow into the ocean. We are looking for adventurous volunteers to be a scientist for the day to help ensure clean creeks, beaches, and oceans. Tasks include collecting water samples and recording data at sites from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay. These samples will be tested for bacteria, metals, total suspended solids, and nutrients, which can negatively impact humans and wildlife.

Can you help the RCD by spreading the word to your network? First Flush is open to all, so if anyone at your organization would like to join us during the first big rain of the year, we would love to see you there! As always, thank you for your support and partnership.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Although we are in drought, if we receive rains, they will likely arrive in November or December. This is a one-time volunteer event that will have a positive and long-term impact in our community. No experience necessary. Training provided. Be a Scientist for a day, Water Hero for a lifetime!

TRAINING MEETING DETAILS:

Virtual Training on Thursday September 12th 6:00 PM

In-person Training Saturday September 21st 10:30 AM
