Through Coastside Gives

Sea Hugger is proud to participate in Coastside Gives, an annual community fundraising event that supports local nonprofits working to protect and strengthen the Coastside. Coastside Gives brings together residents, businesses and supporters who care about the future of our community. For 24 hours, people come together to raise funds for organizations making a difference across Half Moon Bay and the surrounding Coastside region.

What Is Coastside Gives?

Coastside Gives is a 24-hour online giving event organized by the Community Foundation of San Mateo County. The event raises funds for dozens of Coastside nonprofits working in environmental protection, education, arts and community services. This community-wide campaign increases visibility for local nonprofits and helps organizations like Sea Hugger grow programs that directly benefit our coastal environment.

Participating in Coastside Gives allows Sea Hugger to reach new supporters and secure funding needed to expand ocean protection programs.

Why Sea Hugger Participates

Plastic pollution remains one of the greatest threats to marine ecosystems. Every year plastic waste enters the ocean and harms wildlife, coastal habitats and food systems.

Sea Hugger has a variety of programs focused on helping people live a more sustainable lifestyle and be good stewards of our most precious resource - our oceans!

• Education Program: We visit Coastside schools, read The Littlest Sea Hugger book, and host field trips; we sponsor two scholarships to HMBHS students majoring in environmental or ocean studies; and we provide free educational resources online to teach the youth about our delicate marine ecosystem, sea creatures, and how we can protect them.

• Beach Cleanup and Cigarette Butt Bin Programs: We keep our beaches, harbor, and streets clean of trash and toxic cigarette butts at our community and Team Building beach cleanups and through our cigarette butt receptacles that are placed throughout the harbor.

• Outreach Program: We help local businesses comply with the San Mateo County Disposable Foodware Ordinance helping create a circular economy on the Coastside, and we provide an online store hosting a variety of sustainable, plastic-free merchandise to help kickstart your reusable lifestyle and ditch single-use plastic.

• Micro-Grant Program: We support Little4Tokens in South Africa and Trash4Tokens in Mexico as they incentivize their communities to clean their neighborhoods by giving them a token for each bag of trash that they can exchange for food and household goods.

• Advocacy Program: We promote conservation laws at the local, State, and National level; and share actions we can all take to reduce our footprint.
